چکیده

Recent progress in the theory of solar and stellar dynamos is reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on the mean-field theory which tries to describe the collective behavior of the magnetic field. In order to understand solar and stellar activity, a quantitatively reliable theory is necessary. Much of the new developments center around magnetic helicity conservation which is seen to be important in numerical simulations. Only a dynamical, explicitly time dependent theory of α-quenching is able to describe this behavior correctly.

Non-linear and chaotic dynamo regimes

An update is given on the current status of solar and stellar dynamos. At present, it is still unclear why stellar cycle frequencies increase with rotation frequency in such a way that their ratio increases with stellar activity. The small-scale dynamo is expected to operate in spite of a small value of the magnetic Prandtl number in stars. Whether or not the global magnetic activity in stars i...

Low-order stellar dynamo models

Stellar magnetic activity – which has been observed in a diverse set of stars including the Sun – originates via a magnetohydrodynamic dynamo mechanism working in stellar interiors. The full set of magnetohydrodynamic equations governing stellar dynamos is highly complex, and so direct numerical simulation is currently out of reach computationally. An understanding of the bifurcation structure,...

Solar and planetary dynamos

While obviously having a common root, solar and planetary dynamo theory have taken increasingly divergent routes in the last two or three decades, and there are probably few experts now who can claim to be equally versed in both. Characteristically, even in the fine and comprehensive book “The magnetic Universe” (Rüdiger & Hollerbach 2004), the chapters on planets and on the Sun were written by...

Ejection of bi - helical fields from the sun Axel

It is argued that much of the observed magnetic helicity losses at the solar surface may represent a reduction of an otherwise more dominant nonlinearity of solar and stellar dynamos. This nonlinearity is proportional to the internal twist (as opposed to writhe) of helical and sigmoidal surface structures.

Coronal activity with XMM-Newton and Chandra

XMM-Newton and Chandra have greatly deepened our knowledge of stellar coronae giving access to a variety of new diagnostics such that nowadays a review of stellar X-ray astronomy necessarily must focus on a few selected topics. Attempting to provide a limited but representative overview of recent discoveries I discuss three subjects: the solar-stellar connection, the nature of coronae in limiti...
